Here I type about something I didn't attend. (and then I recommend an article.)

This past weekend Nashville (y'know, the media mecca that it is) played host to a rather large blogging conference. While several factors (its cost (zilch!), my proximity, blog-ownership, occasional forays into journalism, tendency to conduct armchair media trend analysis, and general propensity for geekishness) made me initially interested, I've been so busy with work/school affairs and other issues that I passed on it. I kind of appreciated the sentiment behind it, but skimming the scheduled topics and speaker list, nothing grabbed me enough to go, particularly in light of the workload. I guess eventually I'll dig around and live vicariously through other folks' commentary on how it went.

Earlier this year I sat in on a discussion table session about blogs at a media conference. Seriously. And it's fun to meet folks who like to talk about this stuff, but it was indeed a little strange, to say the least, considering my 'background' ("Uh, I know about this because... well, yes, I have a web log. But, no, it is not for work, as I started it for fun before I got into this... er, no, you don't really want to look at mine.")

While I do think that the technology has a lot to offer, and there's a lot to be said/learned about blogs being used by individuals and mainstream media alike, one thought that has been rolling around in my head for a while is that the blog-binge is reminding me of the dot-com hoo-ha of the late 90s. Sure the "vehicle"/technology changes retail (or media) to a certain point, but just as a flashy URL address alone doesn't make a business or generate revenue, with blogging, likewise, you also need to offer a worthy end product -- in this present-day case, quality writing, solid reporting, good presentation of content, etc.

I'll shut up now. But I just wanted to share this one article I read the other day, ("Is blogging a revolution? Get a grip.") which encompasses some of my own views on this, and more. And better stated. And by people in this game longer than I.

(By the way, I am not, in fact, analyzing this from an armchair, but rather, a sofa.)

Also, in case you didn't know this, your blog was also listed as a "Nashville Blog" on the front page of either Saturday or Sunday's (can't remember which day) Tennessean business section.

I had no idea. Thanks for letting me know.

Although I'd like to think that my blog transcends city lines.

And now I'm also wondering if it said good Nashville blogs, or just Nashville blogs.

I'll scan it in and send it your way. I note your absence at the recent blog events.

I'm troubled that you attended the meetup that was on a Saturday at 8:30am, but have missed the past two that were hosted at bars. I wonder if you're all talk...

Ha! Perhaps. But more likely I'm avoiding ThursdayNightFever-officiated events.

(Shnap!)

Anyway, thanks.

oh, well, good was definitely inferred! ;) Although, the list looked hastily put together since they listed a couple twice and some had http:'s put in front of them, and others didn't.
